stu dent
In 1971 Tim Whiteford, the editor, asked me to produce a cartoon for Spectrum. I can't say that I'm particularly proud of Stu Dent with its corny punch lines and dismal graphics, but in my defence the jokes were usually produced late in the evening, by committee after several pints. I was usually fairly well gone when doing the drawing which would have been tricky when sober as it had to be done fairly quickly with a blunt stylus on to a waxed Roneo master-sheet in a very limited space.
Stu was exactly the sort of student no right-minded college would ever accept or retain, although in fact I knew one or two people whose character was not a million miles removed from his idle, silly, sexist, drunken persona. However I feel, in retrospect, his laid back attitude does capture something of the zeitgeist.
I am afraid time has not treated the surviving copies I have very kindly so I have had to do a little 'digital remastering' in places, otherwise they are originals including one spelling error, (which I could have corrected if I was that sort of person!)
