Lag's Photos 11
Martyn Grogan sent these
two photos which were taken
just before Snowball '69.
Left is a dapper looking Grog
accompanied by his fiancee at
the time Joyce Jeeves. Joyce is
wearing a black silk catsuit
with fur trim, Martyn wears
matching hankie and tie and
a large grin. Right he is
accompanied by Tony Lowry
who, he tells me, painted his
shoes specially for the
occasion. I added the tints.
Hazel Muthu kindly sent these pics of her and the 'paradise dormitory' that come from 1950-52. she also sent me this email.
I was delighted and surprised to find your website. I was a student at Fishponds Training college as St.Matthias was then called, in 1950-52, in the time of Elsa Nunn. There were only females in the college then, and we were very restricted. No males were allowed in, except in the visitors room. This was far away from our dormitories at the other end of the long corridor and up a flight of stairs. Our rooms were small cubicles containing only a bed, chair and cupboard. Bathrooms and wardrobes were at the end of the long corridor. I took Art and Craft as my main subject and I resided in Paradise. In my second year I became dorm rep. and I had the nightly job of checking that everyone was in by ten o'clock! Some of us were lucky enough to be picked to exchange with modern Whitelands College in London for a week, and visit the Festival of Britain, and other well known sights. We made our own fun with our friends, but male students would have been a bonus! Life must have been very different when you lived there. I taught Infants happily for 25 years only having a break to raise a family. I spent four years in America helping to establish a nursery school in Connecticut. Back in England I was in charge of setting up BBC computers in my school and learning the new technology. At that time no one else was interested in computers.
With Best Wishes, Hazel Gay ( nee Muthu)
